Tegueste
Tegueste is a quaint relaxing town situated in the north east of Tenerife. It is not really a place inundated with regular tourists like say Los Cristianos, but it is a place which is visited by a lot of people who enjoy its colour and splendour. The town dates back many years and secured its own independency from San Cristobal de La Laguna in the 17th Centuary. It originated as one of the menceyatos and is a municipality which hasn't an access to the sea as it is completely surrounded by La Laguna. It has steadily grown on an economy from business and mainly agriculture. The land is ideal for cattle with its pastures and irrigation. As of the last census figures of 2009, the population was just over 10,000. An important event in its calendar which attracts many visitors s the romeria de San Marcos. This is a celebration of St Marcos and is a wonderful time of music, food and colour for locals and tourists alike. It takes place on the closest sunday to April 25th. The parade of floats winds its way through the town with young and old on board dressed in traditional costume. As the processions makes its way though the streets, those on board throw sweets and food items into the crown and also fill glasses with local wines and homemade brews and it's all free! The arts are joined by local farmers driving their cattle, goats, sheep and horses and is a great chance to get up close and personal to these wonderful creatures. Be careful of the horns and especially the droppings they invariably leave behind. The younger generation really get into the spirit of the celebrations and all love to dress up in their costumes to add a youthful vibrancy to the whole event to give it a real carnaval atmosphere. If you love photography this is a fantastic opportunity to take photos that capture the essence of Tenerife and local town customs and traditions. There's two ways to get your photos. The first is to shoot from afar if you manage to find a good vantage point. The other is to simply join in the parade and click away. This is a fantastic way to get interaction with the townsfolk who just want to entertain and makes sure everyone enjoys the day and night. However, once you are in being swept along with the parade, it can be difficult to get out of it, so you have to go with the flow, but this is al part of any romeria parade. The following day, the local people enjoy a potato bake and in the evening, a bonfire is lit with an effigy a top like the 'guy' on bonfire night. The bonfire is a closure to the celebrations where everyone gets back to their normal day to day routine, that is until there's an excuse for another fiesta, party or romeria. return Further Articles |
