Ladies Open 09
We attended the Tenerife Ladies Open 09 (fotos) at Costa Adeje Gold this weekend and had a fabulous time. The ladies never fail to entertain us with their quality golf on this superb course. We met the new press organizer Mr. Miguel Angel Caderot who gave us our photographer press pass. The weekend weather was fantastic with plenty of sunshine, heat and stylish golf. For the second year in succession, an English player took the title. The redheaded Felicity Johnson with the big smile, won the eighth Tenerife Open which places her firmly on the European Tour list. She returned a fantastic card of 67 to end up 14 under par with Becky Brewerton at 12 under. Previously she had taken third position on four occasions in other competitions since turning pro in 2006. Becky Brewerton was the clear overnight leader at 11 under, three shots clear and looking like she only had to keep her form going to take the title. She was firm favourite as they teed off at 11.20 on the final Sunday morning. But, as early as the second hole, Felicity began to show determination to put in a strong challenge with a birdie whilst Becky bogied the third which saw her lead reduced to only one shot. On holes 8 and 12 as Becky made birdies, Felicity matched her and never really let Becky pull away. The following crowds were enthralled by the cat and mouse golf displayed by this leading pair. As we took photos of other players on the course, we could hear the cheers and clapping in the distance. Johnson made it level on the 13th with a two putt birdie to momentarily maintain the challenge. On the next hole, she then dropped a shot after failing to hit the green from the tee but bounced back the very next hole with a birdie when her second shot hit the flag. The 17th hole saw the crowds cheering and clapping in appreciation as Felicity holed a 25 foot putt which was a body blow to Becky Brewerton as they went to the 18th tee with Johnson one up. It was the approach rescue shot with a six iron that Felicity really put the pressure onto Becky as it pitched and rolled up the slope to pass the flag and stop 6 feet from the hole. Meanwhile, Becky had a tricky shot off the side edge of the green which pulled up short leaving her a longish putt to give her any chance of the title. Felicity tapped in her final putt to the cheers of an appreciative crowd. Bettina Hauert took straight third with a final round of 72 whilst England's Melissa Reid returned a 67 to share fourth place with Spain's Tania Elosegui at 6 under par. Anja Monke, who was first round leader, hit a 71 and shared sixth place with Laura Davies at four under. It was the first time Laura had attended the tournament. The course had undergone a mini facelift this year as the majority of its bunkers are now white sand rather than the volcanic black sand. It really looked the part and makes a tremendous difference to the look of the course and our photos. Altogether it was great to attend the event and share the excitement which the ladies always deliver. Further Articles |
