Tenerife Places El Medano

El Medano
El Medano, which is Spanish for Sand Dune, is part of the municipality of Granadilla. It is home to the largest - two kilometers - naturally formed beach in Tenerife and is the wind surfing paradise which has been host to international wind surfing contests. Its Red Mountain, La Montaña Roja, is a protected natural preserve. El Medano has a wooden beach side promenade and possesses a quiet beauty. Whether it's for sunbathing, scuba-diving or windsurfing, the gently sloping sands, clear sea and warm climes appeal to a wide audience. Chief among them are water sports enthusiasts.

The town is mostly residential but tourists enjoy this venue too and indeed return year after year. Building here is still expanding due to popular demand. In El Medano, visitors can enjoy hotels, apartments to rent and other facilities such as snorkelling, boat hire, and take courses in sailing, surfing and paragliding. There are huge variety of fresh fish restaurants and lots of shopping malls to browse including its market. Absolutely ideal for those who wish to live in a coastal area. The Saint, Hermano Pedro (1626-1667), spent some time in a little cave situated near the present-day town. The cave is now the site of a small shrine dedicated to the saint. In the evening, the local bars, pavement cafes, restaurants and nightlife take on their own character. It bustles with people taking in the atmosphere around the town square, market area and beach side shops.

If you don't have a car for getting around and visiting this lovely town, you can get there by bus. The 116, 470 and 483 all service the town from Santa Cruz - Granadilla (116) and Playa de Las Americas (470,483).
