Tenerife South Airport
Tenerife South Airport (Code TFS), is one of two international airports located on Tenerife. It is located in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona and was inaugurated on November 6, 1978 by Queen Sofía of Spain, after whom the airport is dedicated. The airport is one of the 10 busiest airports in Spain and due to the year round mild climate on the Canary Islands has no off-season. It is served almost daily by tourists coming from mainly England and Germany as well as the Scandinavian countries. The airport is operated by AENA (website), who are also responsible for monitoring Spanish airspace. There are more than 1,000 spaces for cars and buses. 58 of the parking spaces are free for a 30-minute maximum stay. Short and long-term parking is situated just across the road from the terminal building, by the bus and taxi stops. The public bus service, TITSA, offers cheap and quick services to all parts of the island. Line 340 connects to the other airport Tenerife North Airport which is 71 km by road. There is one information desk at the airport (tel: +34 (0)922 759 510), which is located in the central hall. It can provide passengers with assistance concerning flight enquiries, airport information and lost property. Reina Sofia handled over 8.2 million passengers in 2008, with the numbers gradually increasing. Of the non Spanish airlines operating almost daily flights to various European airports are: Aer Lingus, Air Berlin, British Airways, Condor, EasyJet, Eurofly, Flyglobespan, Monarch Airlines, Ryanair, and TUIfly. More than 60 different airlines offer regular flights from Tenerife to 70 different destinations. Domestic Spanish connections include Arrecife, Las Palmas, Madrid, Malaga, Barcelona, Valencia and Zaragoza provided by Binter Canarias, Iberia, Air Europa and Spanair. Many types of aircraft use the airport and the busiest days are usually Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. They normally take off to the east with Gran Canaria out to the right hand side. Getting aviation pictures (fotos) is fairly easy with a few good vantage points around the perimeter. Aircraft such as the S7 Airline Airbus 310 are impressive sights, especially on landing. There are a number of Tenerife car hire companies located within the airport to give you the freedom to explore Tenerife to the full. Autos Reisen, Avis, Cicar, Europcar Betacar, Hertz and Record are all represented. Desks are located in the central hall. But if you need a car waiting for you when you arrive, then companies such as CompareCarHire.co.uk can help to get the best deal for your requirements.
