La Matanza
La Matanza de Acentejo, in Spanish means Slaughter of Acentejo, after a battle won by the Spanish in 1494. It is situated on the north coast of Tenerife 15 km east of Puerto de la Cruz and about 23 km from Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The population was 7,587 in 2004. It's is linked with the TF2 motorway and the old highway linking Icod de los Vinos and the capital. Farmland cover much of the area. Much of the population is now shifting from rural to urban and tourism. Acentejo was part of the Menceyato (kingdom) of Taoro before the arrival of the Spaniards. The first and second battles of Acentejo took place in 1494. Alonso Fernández de Lugo suffered a crushing defeat in this first battle at the site now called La Matanza. The battle actually took place in Barranco de San Antonio, known to the Guanches as Farfan. Victory for the Spaniards came in second battle which led to the naming of the town of La Victoria de Acentejo. return Further Articles |
