Arona
Arona is located on the southern tip of Tenerife. The borough covers an area of 81.79 square kilometers comprising 4% of the island's area and is 81km from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island's capital. The population of the area in 1996 was 28,208 and has grown rapidly in recent years due to the growth of a tourist industry. This growth was one of the fastest between 2000 and 2002 in the Canary Islands. The metropolitan area is about 120,000 with Adeje and San Miguel de Abona. Arona has a pleasant climate with temperatures ranging from 20 to 25 degrees C. The important parts of the area include the famous tourist resorts of Los Cristianos, Playa de las Americas, Costa del Silencio and Las Galletas. Arona also features Punta Salema with its lighthouse, the southernmost point on the island of Tenerife. Arona is serviced by the TF1 Motorway linking Adeje and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The motorway was first linked in the 1990s. The old highway runs within the coastline. Many farmlands can be found in this region with the mountains to the north. The area was sparsely populated in the initial centuries since the settlement of the island. While Viera y Clavijo mentioned a small village of the same name in an early work on the islands, a church was not built until the 17th century and this church did not obtain the status of a parish church until March 1796. Fishing and agriculture was the main economy until the twentieth century which included cochineal, bananas and cattle. There was also a small quarry in the fishing village of Los Cristianos in the nineteenth century. The first half of the twentieth century saw the population grow slowly despite a slump in cochineal prices and a general decline in farming. However, since the Spanish Civil war, the economy and population has grown rapidly and in recent years has become an important and popular tourist destination for those wanting guaranteed sunshine. The population has grown from 13,556 in 1981 to over 60,000 as of 2005. In contrast, the area had a population of approximately 2,000 in 1901. The tourism industry employs around 60% of the workforce. Notable areas are the 4 hectares of Central Park of Arona (Parque Central de Arona) finished in 2004. It was designed by architects and biologists and hosts a collection of tropical palms and a rocky section with the original endemic flora native to this part of the island. Los Cristianos is one of the important main tourist centres on the south coast of Tenerife. Originally, a quaint fishing village, the resort has undergone major expansion over the last twenty years and is now a bustling resort. The beach of Playas de Las Vistas has been refurbished with sand from the seabed turning it into one of the longest beaches on Tenerife. Las Galletas is a fishing village situated between Los Cristianos and the Tenerife South Airport in the south. It also has some tourist facilities but plans are underway to develop the area to promote its tourist appeal. Its marina has recently undergone a facelift. < return Further Articles |
