Los Cristianos
Los Cristianos was officially recognised in governmental documents, as been established in 1888 with 29 houses and a cave. The town with its natural harbour, thrived as the import-export centre of the south of Tenerife. In 1909 the very first Quay was built to ship the produce of a local distillery. It still remains today and is known as "El Puerto Viejo" (Old Quay).

The origins of tourism for Los Cristianos lie with a Swedish man called Bengt Rylander. He was locally known as Don Benito and came to Los Cristianos in 1956 suffering from multiple sclerosis. There was notable improvement in his health. He spread the word of the mild and sunny climate he had discovered to his friends in Sweden.

So during the late 1950s and early 1960s, Los Cristianos grew as a resort for ailing & convalescent Swedes. Their pioneering visits have left their mark on the town, with the main high-street in Los Cristianos called "Avenida de Suecia" (Avenue of Sweden) and the "Casa Sueca", which is a Swedish Lutheran Church, located on the seafront.

Tourism was not limited to the Swedes. Growing numbers of visitors came from other European countries. Large buildings sprang up in the 60's in to house the increasing number of tourists, these included Cristianmar, Rosamar and the Oasis Moreque Hotel. The number of disabled Swedish visitors increased leading to the opening of the Vintersol public rehabilitation clinic in 1965.

Los Cristianos is a pretty town with a history that predates the tourist boom of the 1970's and 80's. For many years, this holiday destination was a quiet fishing village and evidence of its humble origins in the typical Canarian architecture of the older buildings can still be seen. Nowadays, the town offers a vibrant holiday experience with its two golden sand beaches, multitude of bars and restaurants and its year round sunny climate. There is a wealth of accommodation to suit all budgets including hotels, self-catering apartments and Timeshare resorts. Many excursions are available including dolphin and whale watching as well as game fishing trips and party cruises.

Los Cristianos (fotos) still retains a hint of the original fishing village it used to be with its fresh fish dispensers on the port. It is the second largest holiday resort in the south of Tenerife, the largest being its next door neighbour Playa de Las Americas. The centre is completely pedestrian friendly, which is good news for tourists and a welcome change from the steady flow of traffic typical in areas such as Las Americas. The older area of the town is made up of houses in which most of the local Canarian population still live. Los Cristianos merges into Playa de Las Americas further down the coastline and can be reached by bus or on foot. It has two main beaches both of which are suitable for soaking up the sun and swimming. It also has numerous restaurants and bars including one or two discos.

There are two world-class beaches: The main beach - Playa de Los Cristianos (fotos) - is a sandy beach sheltered by the harbour and boasts a number of facilities including water sports, beach volley ball, showers and a children's play area. Playa de Las Vistas (fotos) is located in the next bay beyond the harbour and is man-made. It's protected by break-waters and also boasts a number of facilities including water sports, showers and a tourist information site. A promenade runs the whole length of the beach and there are plenty of bars and restaurants to stop off for a rest.

One of the best places to view Playa de Las Vistas is further away. Walk up the Chayofa Hill in Los Cristianos. This is a curved climb to the top of the hill which backs onto the hinterland of the beach. From here you can take photos of the beach taking in its full panorama. You can see La Gomera (fotos) clearly on the horizon and is a spectacular backdrop to the curving beach with its rows of sunbeds and sunshades. There is also a rocky, black-sand beach in the 'Rincón' area of Los Cristianos, between the headland near the Puerto Viejo and the cliffs of Montaña Guaza.

Los Cristianos is also a major commercial centre for the south of Tenerife. A vibrant high-street offers a range of small stores, catering for both tourists and residents alike. There are a number of small shopping malls as well as a major national-chain of supermarkets.
