Puerto de la Cruz
Puerto de la Cruz (fotos), means 'crossport' and is situated on the northern coast in the Orotava Valley 23 miles from Santa Cruz. It is an old colonial town and the smallest of the municipalities with its inhabitants known as 'Portuenses'. Originally the area was agricultural, but this has shifted in favour of tourism. There are many places of interest such as: Lago de Martianez designed by Cesar Manrique. The Casino. Charco square is very popular for 'people watching' in one of the bars or restaurants. Loro Parque is the famous park on the outskirts of Puerto with fabulous Killer Whales, Dolphins, Penguins and of course, Parrots. Jardin Beach, the famous black sand beach full of palm trees. The Botanical Gardens in the district of La Paz. Puerto is popular all year round, especially at Christmas. Many events are held there especially its Carnaval where the whole place raises a level and the streets fill with people and parades. You can get beautiful photos of the processions with fabulous costumes, plenty of food, drink and music. The 'Embarcacion de la Virgin' is held in July and has now become known as 'La Fiesta del Agua' where water is thrown during the festivities. 'La Sardinada' is held the night before where sardines are fried and sold at San Telmo. A large paper mache figure of a sardine is carried through the town and burnt on a funeral pyre in the harbour. The night is rounded off by a spectacular fireworks display. The old cobbled streets and houses are quaint and picturesque. So too are the Castillo San Felipe and the beautiful church of Senora de la Pena de Francia. There is always something or someone to photograph here as the streets bustle with people enjoying the facilities and atmosphere. The fishing port is busy with locals and tourists alike. The fishermen in their little boats bring in the catches of the day. The fish are processed and sold on make shift stalls. The old colonial part of the town is a network of tree lined avenues, narrow winding streets, shady squares and steps running from one level to another. Many of the fine old houses with their distinctive Canarian balconies have survived. La Paz, the most recent development on the outskirts of town, is an example of what can be done with a new development. If you are a shopper, then this is the place for you. Puerto has a 'free port status' and imports items for all over the world. Electronic items such as cameras, DVD's etc., are at bargain prices and perfumes and alcohol are other favourite choices. Overall, Puerto is a beautiful town to enjoy a relaxing holiday with plenty to do and see. < return Further Articles |
