Abama Senior Cup
Tennis is very popular in Tenerife. Most hotels have excellent facilities for their guests, but members of the public can hire the courts as well. The Tenerife weather makes it possible to play all year round, day or night.
Spain has produced many tennis stars, most noticeable is Rafael Nadal who made the number one ranking in 2008 and was the first Spaniard to win the Australian Open. This put Spain on the tennis map and focused the minds of young and old. The Hotel at Abama on the west coast of Tenerife near Guia de Isora, houses the Sanchez Academy. Founded by Emelio Sanchez Vicario and Sergio Casal, the academy is one of the most prestigious centres for tennis excellence in Europe. Players of all abilities can receive instruction on all aspects of their game no matter what level of aptitude. Individuals or companies can take advantage of the superb facilities and customise their programmes accordingly. The hotel has 7 floodlit, flexipave courts and 4 floodlit artificial grass courts.
In 2008, the hotel was the venue for the very first Abama Senior Cup which attracted tennis stars Björn Borg, Pat Cash, Michael Stich, Albert Costa, Emilio Sánchez Vicario to entertain tennis fans for three days culminating in the final on Saturday the 19th April. It wasn't just a tournament, it was an opportunity for kids of all ages from tennis schools all over Tenerife to meet the stars, receive coaching as well as play against them in a Pro Am tournament.
We were able to take fotos of the stars in action who showed they haven't lost the style or skills which saw them to the heights of their professional careers.
The weather during the event was hot and sunny and around 1500 fans gathered on the Saturday to watch the finals. Bjorn Borg and Michael Stich contested 3rd and 4th place with Stich emerging the winner. The final was between the always entertaining Pat Cash and another crowd favourite, Albert Costa. They played a fast and entertaining game despite the heat. Albert Costa eventually ran out the winner to take the title. The organisation and facilities were superb and contributed to a an excellent day and a successful three days enjoyed by everyone.
