Cape Verde Islands
Cape Verde Islands are located in the Atlantic Ocean 375 miles off the coast of West Africa. It's four hours south flying time from the Canary Islands. The previously uninhabited islands were discovered and colonized by the Portuguese in the fifteenth century and attained independence from Portugal in 1975

There are ten islands altogether. They are divided into the Barlavento (windward) islands - Santo Antão, São Vicente, Santa Luzia, São Nicolau, Sal, and Boa Vista - and the Sotavento (leeward) islands - Maio, Santiago, Fogo and Brava.

Cape Verde islands are a delight for taking photos for canaryphotostock. The colours are vibrant, the waters are clear and the people are eager to meet anyone and everyone. We flew to the island of Sal (fotos) from Tenerife North Airport, Los Rodeos via Gran Canaria, and Praia. Landing at Amilcar Cabral airport on the TACV Boeing 757 gave a quick opportunity to view this little island from the air. The local taxi drivers jostled for our trade and we were taken to Santa Maria (fotos), on the southern tip of Sal island. We stayed at the Hotel Sobrado which is the first one you come to on the left as you enter Santa Maria.

The pier is the main focal point for watching the fishing boats returning with their catch. Barracudas are landed daily and the fish are prepared there and then before being taken away in wheelbarrows to be sold to restaurants. The children love jumping off the pier into the clear turquoise warm waters. The sands are white, hot and there's miles of the stuff! Taking a westward walk along the beach you come to some of the big hotels like the RUI Funana and Oasis Atlantico Novorizonte. Swimmers and surfers are abundant here as well as people just relaxing, so there are always photo opportunities.

We managed to get to a few places in Sal during our few days there. Ponta Preta (fotos) beach is long and gorgeous and Murdiera (fotos) is a narrow strip oasis where we enjoyed many a lunch break. Espargos is a sprawling low level town but bustles with everyday life. Puerto Palmeira (fotos) is a short distance away and we managed to get some nice images of the locals going about their lives. A group of kids were entertaining and having fun swimming and diving in the harbour. We travelled to Piedra Lume and took the classic photo of the church.

We decided to fly to Boa Vista (fotos) and landed at Rabil airport. Our driver took us to our accommodation on Estoril Beach (fotos) at Sal Rei (fotos). Boa Vista is home to some of the most dazzling beaches on the archipelago covering a staggering 55km. Closest to the African mainland, Boa Vista is not only renowned for its stunning beaches but its marine life too. Nightlife here is very low key and quiet with just a scattering of local restaurants and bars. Again this is a little island with fishing and tourism as the main industry. The ship wreck of the Santa Maria is well worth a visit for taking photos as well as inland towns such as Joao Galega (fotos).

Depending on the time of year, you may even spot some turtles on the islands southern beaches. Boa Vista is thought to be third most important Loggerhead nesting site in the world, with the favoured time of year for turtles to nest usually being during the months of June through to September.

The miles of unspoilt coast line are excellent for you to enjoy uninterrupted walks as well as being a popular location for water sports (fotos) enthusiasts.

Some great photos for the collection were taken, especially of the beaches, but a return visit is on the cards and hopefully we can get to the other islands.
