Eternal Spring
The island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, is about 200 miles off the coast of West Africa (Longitude: 16.34° West, Latitude 28.19° North). It has a population of 852,945 (census 2006). The capital is Santa Cruz de Tenerife with a population of 221,627 as of 2006. The capital used to be San Cristobal de la Laguna, but the status was transferred due to the expansion of Santa Cruz and its port in the late 1800's.

Tenerife is a protectorate of Spain, but totally autonomous and is not a member of the E.U. As a result, you can take back different quantities of duty free compared to mainland Spain.

Tenerife is the largest of the 7 Canary Islands. It has a land area of just over 2,000 square kms. The islands in order of size are: Tenerife, La Gomera, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma and El Hierro. Tenerife has many different climate zones with many types of agriculture. It grows from potatoes and grapes to the commercial cultivation of bananas, lemon, peach, apricot and orange trees.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a lively city offering a variety of things to do and see. It has a popular nightlife scene with many restaurants offering food tastes from all over the world. This important capital becomes a world focus of entertainment in February. Its famous carnaval (fotos). is said to be only second to that of Rio. If you want fabulous photos and images, this is the place to take them. The streets fill with colour and noise for the whole month with plenty to do and see. Puerto de la Cruz and Los Cristianos (fotos) are also venues for spectacular carnaval parades.

Without question, the island's dominant feature is Mount Teide at 3,717.91 meters (12,198 ft). Teide (pronounced tay-dee), forms the highest peak on any Spanish territory. Its sheer size and height dominates the landscape for miles around. The earliest recorded mention of 'El Teide' and its snow-mantled fiery cone, was by the 15th century Italian explorer and navigator, Christopher Columbus. Taking photos of Teide is always a pleasure. It provides something different on every photo session as the weather can change quickly in and around Teide. Pictures of Teide vary everyday depending on what time you shoot. Photography is popular because of the ever changing dramatic countryside and superb climate. It is always a 'must' for holidays in the Canary Islands and a haven for photographers.

One of the most spectacular times is around January and February when the weather is changeable. When the snow comes down, Teide and the landscape take on a spectacular guise ready for memorable pictures.

It is usually best for photos when the snow gets past the 'caldera'. This means Teide is completely covered. The roads can be difficult getting up there, but the rewards of amazing fotos and images is great.

The majority of popular holiday resorts are in the south of the island. Most notable are Playa de Las Americas and Los Cristianos (article). The latter is a charming fishing port which has retained its charm despite tourism growth. Plenty of families can be seen snapping fotos for cherished memories of their visit to the Canary islands. It is very popular with the more mature tourist as well. There are plenty of restaurants and walks. Los Cristianos beach has recently undergone a complete facelift, so some beautiful photos can be taken in and around the beach area.

Playa de Las Americas is not for those wanting a quiet, relaxing holiday. Wham, bam, boom, boom is Playas de Las Americas all over. The sand for Playa de las Vistas (fotos) was imported from the Sahara and is a haven for chilling out from the night before. It's famous for the Veronicas strip, which is club after club, bar after bar and a focus for the young and lively clubbers out for a good time.

The temperate climate is one of the attractions for holidays in Tenerife and the other Canary Islands. This attracts people looking to buy their dream home in the sun. The ''calimas'' will make times hot for sure and is a good reason to have air con in your property, but generally the constant warm climate is comfortable and allows people to do their favourite things without wondering if an umbrella is needed!
